Veterans Medicare Benefits
Veterans who supplement VA health benefits with Medicare enjoy more coverage options.
Even if you have VA coverage, The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recommends enrolling in Medicare at 65. This will ensure additional coverage options when seeking care outside of VA facilities, especially as it relates to specialized care, or a health condition not connected to your military service.
Medicare can be very helpful for those veterans assigned to a lower priority group with higher out-of-pocket expenses.
If you decide to enroll in Medicare, your VA benefits pay for VA-authorized services, and Medicare pays for Medicare-covered services.
How does Medicare and VA Health Care work together?
Medicare Advantage (MA) Dual Special Needs Plans (DSNPs) can simplify your health care process by coordinating benefits between Medicare and Medicaid. The plans are not offered in every state, and coverages provided can vary. Here are some of the benefits associated with a DSNP:
Medicare Part A and VA Benefits
When pairing Medicare Part A and VA benefits together, you can receive covered care at a non-VA medical facility. This is valuable because it gives veterans more choices when seeking medical care. Plus, enrolling in Medicare Part A ensures coverage for ailments not connected to military service.
Medicare Part B and VA Benefits
Also allows veterans to use non-VA doctors. In addition, Medicare Part B can help reduce out-of-pocket costs if VA benefits don’t cover some medical services. In case some VA benefits are lost or don’t cover everything needed, Medicare Part B is available instead of paying 100% of the medical expenses.
Medicare Part C and VA Benefits
Also called Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicare Part C, combines the benefits of both Medicare A + B and in most cases, Part D prescription drug coverage, into a single plan. Many plans cover additional health services for vision care, hearing and dental. Plus, Medicare Part C can help reduce out-of-pocket medical expense not covered by VA benefits.
